Habits

I sit here staring at the empty bowl of goldfish crackers (for those not familiar with the tasty morsels they are tiny crackers that come in awesome flavors such as Xplosive Pizza and Nothing Nacho.) They are not supposed to be shoveled into my mouth but the mouths of my children, Sloth 1 and Sloth 2. This got me thinking about what habits I should be changing.

What I eat
Clearly chowing down on crackers in the middle of the afternoon is not good when there’s a perfectly good looking apple with my name on it. If I root around the fridge behind some science experiments that are currently working their way to explosive stage, there should be a stick of wilted celery calling my name. These are all far better alternatives to really tasty crackers.

Exercising
I promised myself when I set up the shiny, new elliptical that I would use it every day. I battled through the cobwebs on it yesterday and I swear I actually heard it tell me to get off. I wish I was one of those people who got runners high or skipping rope splendor, but I'm not. I'd rather eat my own cooking, and that’s saying something.

Doing something I love every day
I love to read and I used to read all the time, but then I felt guilty about taking the time to do something that wasn’t child, house, husband related. As I get older and crankier, I've decided I'm taking Hayson time to read, every single day. For forty precious minutes I don't care about Sloth Two’s lost shoe that somehow I've lost. I do not hear the groans about ‘not that again for dinner,’ and I ignore the cat who if he doesn't get fed this very second will expire on the spot.

I’m keeping the list to three at present, there’s another forty thousand things I need to work on. But it’s a start.

Do you have any habits you want to break or ones you want to make? I'd love to hear from you.

  1. Hayson, I have so many bad habits to break. I'm there with you on the food and the exercise ones. And I get no runner/skipping bliss, but do get it from food!!

I want to write, constructively, every day...but that doesn't seem to happen because work gets in the way, or family, or life.

And I'd love to soak in a bathtub and read a book once a fortnight, or even once a month. Bliss time. But nope, like writing, it gets swallowed up in the ever-shrinking-hours of my life!

Glad someone else has the same problem.

    1. Oh, Cath, a bath, with a book and bubbles and no interruptions! That sounds like heaven. I hope you do it. Take some Cath time. I am so envious of the people who get the exercise rush. I invent excuses like my hair hurts and I really should clean the oven to get out of actually moving my Jupiter size butt.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Your butt is NOT the size of Jupiter! But I hear you on the taking time to exercise thing. I don't get the runner's high either, but when the closest I come to any kind of high whatsoever is oxygen deprivatation because my pants are so tight my blood can't circulate...well...it's a problem. Okay, resolved, I will go for a run, (and, as a reward, afterwards I will stop at Starbucks and get a chocolate donut).

    1. Samanthe.

Clearly you don't have your glasses on, as Jupiter it is. I'll join you at Starbucks as Jupiter sized butt needs other universes to conquer.

I've seen you. You're glamorous, gorgeous and all things good!

    1. Well done, Jennifer. I want to be more like you!

Yes, I struggle with the discipline of writing as well. Actually just discipline all round really.

  4. LOL - when I sat down to write about my "habits" I realied they're probably more addictions.... wine, diet coke and pfaffing around on the internet.
What can I say, I'm an all-or-nothing kind of gal!

Is there a group that serves all three do you think?

ps - Hayson I mentioned WINO (how appropriate given my erlier comment) on my current blog with Sara Harlequin Junkie :-)

    1. Amy, we shall open a shop for all your addictions and mine. We will have the wine served by hunky men who answer to the name of Sven. Can we add jugs of margaritas and we shall pfaff to our hearts content?

I just zipped across to the blog. I adore you! Thank you for the love.

I love that my first book is called WINO, so me...so me.

Hayson - ps. I'm really looking forward to Driving Her Crazy. Looks most awesome.

  5. I love goldfish!!! I need to cut back on my coffee. On my writing mornings, I drink way too much! An entire pot. By. Myself.

    1. Hi, Abby, I love coffee and way too many goldfish. Me and Peets have a special relationship. Mind you if I had a pot I'd be bouncing like a little pink bunny. The goldfish are on me when we meet up.
