Firsts

Ah, the world of firsts.

First blog post.

First book.

First time saying I’m an author.

But I digress. Firsts. We all had them and hopefully will have tons more before we, you know, check out.

First kiss? Mark. I was six and he had no say in the matter. I cornered him in the room where we left our school bags. I can still smell his fear, stale sandwiches and squashed bananas.

First date? Easy. Fenton. Ah, Fenton. I have no idea what movie we saw but we were thirteen and we kissed for forty-seven minutes straight without coming up for air.

First breakup? Oh, those teenage breakups. I honestly thought I’d die. My internal organs would fail and I’d be nothing more than dark matter roaming the universe. I also begged my parents to let me go and live in Djibouti and practice my four words of French. They being parents said no.

First time falling in love? That marrow sapping feeling of hanging up the phone and not speaking to him until, like, Oh My God, tomorrow. When your heart literally beats out a lonely tattoo on your chest wall thinking about your wedding day.

First Hate? Crickets. And not the Jiminy kind. I got swarmed by a black plague of them when I was little. They were stuck in my hair. I swore I inhaled one. Their little hooked legs on my scalp. If I think about this too long I’ll need to go and lie down in a dark room, so I’ll stop.

What firsts do you have?

I’m so happy to say I’m a love addicted author who hangs out with sloths (more on them later) who has managed to write her first blog post. I’m thrilled my first book Wife in Name Only is my first.

Thank you to all you lovely people for being my first blog and website visitors.

  1. Hayson, I LOVE your website and your blog! Huge congrats on having your first book released soon. I'm going to be muscling my way to the front of the queue for my copy.

Firsts? Hmm, well, I grew broccoli for the first time this year if that counts? Despite the howls of protest from the short people in my family when I serve it up every night, I'm quite proud of it! I haven't told them that the spinach is nearly ready...

Bookmarking your fabulous website and blog!

  2. Thanks so much, Barbara for stopping by. You're kind words mean the world.

Broccoli. My mom, bless her, used to boil every vegetable for a minimum of fifteen minutes so we all didn't die of a rare disease. But broccoli fresh out of the garden all crunchy and green sounds delicious.

Thanks so much for stopping by.

  3. I adore your website and blog too, Hayson! I've got some serious website envy going on now though :)

I just read you're a foster-dog owner. Which gave me an idea for one of my firsts. I'm a first time dog owner (Jazzy is a greyhound) and I'm wondering why on earth it took us so long to bring one home to join our family.

Congratulations on your first book! I'm looking forward to grabbing a copy too!

    1. Thanks so much for stopping by LaVerne. I adore greyhounds. We haven't had the pleasure of fostering one yet, but there are quite a few greyhound rescue groups around. The greyhounds I've met have been the sweetest dogs. Please give Roxie a hug for me!

  4. Congratulations Hayson on your First book (can't wait to read), your First website and your First blog. Golly firsts ...

My first day at school I went armed with a length of 4x2 wood. On my pre-starting visit I had spied the woodworking table with a saw, hammer and a whole lot of 4 inch nails. I was instantly hooked. I could see that school was the place for me. But I returned home that first day utterly disgusted. The saw was BLUNT, and worse, the teacher didn't intend to have it sharpened!!

May you have many more fabulous firsts.

    1. Shirley, that's hilarious and made my day. I can just see a determined little girl walking to school with a hunk of wood. I do hope you've kept the woodwork passion. I don't remember my first day of school (I think I blotted it out)) but I do remember bees in the bathroom at Kindergarten and how I'd never be able to 'go'. Obviously it was resolved somehow.

May you still keep having fabulous firsts.

      Best wishes,
      Hayson

    1. Thanks for the love, Margie. I'm super thrilled with it. Maddee at Xuni has been a joy to work with. April can't come fast enough for me so I can finally see Wife in Name Only out in the world and it all wasn't just a figment of my imagination.

      Take care,

  6. Hi Hayson,

Congratulations on all these wonderful firsts! Love the site, so sunny and inviting.

I've just had one of those amazing 'firsts' - on Friday I saw my book for pre-order on Amazon for the first time. I SO know where you're coming from!

    1. Congratulations, Maggie that's awesome. Congratulations! Isn't it the best feeling? After slogging away for so long and feeling that nothing you write is good, then someone has faith and all those hard years melt away when you see your cover. Congratulations, again!

  7. I love your website Hayson - it's just gorgeous!

My first is riding my new bike to work this morning. First time I've ridden to work since I had children 10 years ago. It was so much fun flying through the quiet, dark streets, heart pumping as much with exhilaration as exhaustion! I felt like a kid again - and that can't be a bad thing!

Can't wait to read your book!

  8. Thanks for the kind thoughts. I appreciate them.

Go you on your bike! I say feeling like a kid again is gold. Ah, to have those years back. I haven't been on a bike in ages. I've got one I've just never made the time. Now is as good a time as any to give it a go and I think I will.

    Thanks for stopping by.
